I like farm fresh eggs but there are some farmers who will scam you about “Farm Fresh” eggs.  When you buy something advertised as “Farm Fresh,” your natural inclination is to imagine that whatever it is you are buying can’t be more than a day or two old when you buy it.  The truth often is that when you buy eggs advertised as “Farm Fresh,” it really means that they are “Fresh Off The Farm,” even though they might have been laying in a refrigerator on that farm for a month or more.

When you buy those “Fresh Eggs” from your favorite super market, there is something else you should know:  By law, an egg can be sold for up to 30 days after the date it was put in the carton. And farmers have up to 30 days to go from when the egg is laid to the carton. That means those supermarket eggs can be two months old by the time you buy them.

So much for fresh eggs!

My Favorite Candies

My favorite candies are soft licorice, butterscotch chews and jelly beans.

The problem with licorice is that most of the licorice I can find for sale is artificially flavored with anise or something else.  Today, however, I did manage to find real black licorice candy that was manufactured in Finland.

My favorite Jelly Beans are the ones called “Jelly Belly” and I heard somewhere that it is the Jelly Belly brand that was the favorite of former President Ronald Reagan.  I found that I can buy Jelly Bellies in Two pound bags on Amazon. (I am not being compensated for mentioning the brand name, “Jelly Belly.” — (I have to tell you that by law.).

Cleaning Eye Glasses

This is one of my favorite life hacks and I just discovered it a couple of days ago.  I found that a common paper coffee filter is one of the easiest materials with which to clean eye-glasses.  I tried it and it works.  Don’t ask me how it works or why it works but it does for me.

Today I began eating more green leafy vegetables in my diet.  I had been neglecting greens for months but today I bought 4 big bunches of loose turnip greens and prepared them and had a generous portion of them for dinner. (One and a half cups for a serving.)

To prepare my greens, I washed them thoroughly first.  Never can tell who has been handling them or what has taken up residence among their leaves.

After washing the greens, I added enough low-sodium chicken broth to cover them and simmered them for Two hours minimum.  Greens cook slow and if you want them to be tender, you need to cook them for at least One and a half to Two hours.

I seasoned them at the table with special “Greens Seasoning” that I bought at the super market.  I like the Southern-Style greens seasoning.

    Refrigerated raw shell eggs will keep without significant quality loss for about 4 to 5 weeks beyond the sell date or about 3 weeks after you bring them home. A general rule to follow is that any egg that looks or smells odd should NOT be used. Just crack each egg in a small bowl, smell it – your nose will tell you!

  2. Over here, they have to stamp a ‘sell-by’ date on cartons of eggs sold in shops. As you say, that doesn’t help us know a ‘when laid’ date. But even though some farm shops around here sell supposedly fresh-laid eggs, we have no idea how long they have been sitting on the counter.

I use to get my eggs from a local farmer that I had done business with for 11 years he has died and I am back to market eggs….I have never been a big sweets eater….honey only….the coffee filter is a good tip…..turnips are my favorite greens…..I cook mine with bacon or ham hock…if they start smelling too loud they are overcooked. Enjoy your meal….chuq
